I was thinking about the dynamic of the Marauders the other day and how Pettigrew really didn't fit into the crew. James was obviously the head of the group. A tanned jock, okay, tanned by English standards, who was a show off and a bit of a bully. He liked to make sure that everyone knew about him.

The second in command was Sirius. He was a pretty boy who probably charmed all the female teachers in the school. With someone gaining that much attention, James would of course want Sirius near him.

Then there was Remus who was quiet and very, very smart. He didn't seem like the type that James would want to hang around with but Sirius might. And after James learned that Remus was werewolf, that is, a very powerful and dangerous creature hidden in this bookish kid, I can see the Potter kid warming up to him quickly.

That leaves Peter. Not that smart. Not that strong. Not that unique. Not at all good looking. So, why does James hang out with him? Or better yet, allow Peter to hang out him?

For the idol worship.

James has an ego the size of Russia and Peter is the dealer that feeds it.

And because the bond between James and Peter was purely one sided and shallow, it was easier for Peter to betray his former friend. Unlike Sirius and Remus who had a deeper bond with James.

It's not that Sirius and Remus were displeased with Peter. It's more of they can't be bothered with his constant hero worship. A deep and everlasting bond between them and Peter never formed.

So, here's a comic reflecting that.

Ahhh, those cloaks. I am glad my school uniform never had to deal with such things. They look like they would be such a pain. Remus, being the practical person that he is, just tosses it over his shoulders like a cape. It's how I would go around. Think about how many times those cloaks must have snagged onto things. It would have driven me mad.

One last thing, I was reading over the details about the Marauders in Order of the Phoenix and it never mentions James having glasses. I guess, along with having his mum's eyes, Harry has her poor eyesight? Maybe Lily wore contacts and that detail was never mentioned. Anyway, that's why James doesn't have glasses.
